Pastor Evan Rose -- Membership - 3/3/2026
Church membership is not a name on a list. It is not a voting right. It is not a social club. It is not an optional add-on to Christian life.
Biblically, membership is a covenant relationship — a mutual commitment between believers under the lordship of Christ. And that covenant includes both the church and its pastor.
At Lake Hills, we have a written Pastor–Church Covenant not because we want to formalize something cold, but because we want to clarify something sacred.
Covenant language reminds us that church life is not built on preference, personality, or convenience. It is built on shared promises under God.
Scripture paints this picture clearly:
Elders are called to shepherd the flock willingly and eagerly (1 Peter 5:2–3).
Members are called to respect and follow faithful leadership (Hebrews 13:17).
All believers are called to unity, love, and mutual care (Ephesians 4:1–6).
Membership works when both sides understand their responsibility.
A pastor does not promise perfection. He promises faithfulness.
Our covenant outlines responsibilities that are deeply biblical:
Seeking the mind of Christ and guidance of the Spirit.
Living with integrity at home and in the church.
Preaching to instruct, inspire, and equip.
Leading with humility and spiritual clarity.
Caring for people in times of joy, sorrow, crisis, and growth.
Leading the church to fulfill the Great Commission.
The pastor is called to spiritual leadership — not control, not celebrity, not performance — but shepherding.
Paul tells Timothy to “preach the word… be ready in season and out of season” (2 Timothy 4:2). That is the pastor’s primary calling: feed the flock, guard the doctrine, lead the mission.
Membership also carries responsibility for the church in regards to the elders of the church.
Our covenant outlines commitments such as:
Praying for the pastor’s spiritual power.
Loving and supporting his family.
Participating actively in ministry.
Speaking directly rather than gossiping.
Providing resources necessary for faithful leadership.
Offering fair and constructive review.
Respecting time boundaries in bi-vocational seasons.
This is not about elevating men. It is about honoring Christ’s design for His church.
Hebrews 13:17 calls believers to support faithful leadership “since they keep watch over your souls.” That verse is sobering for pastors — and grounding for members.
Healthy churches do not consume leadership. They partner in ministry.
The covenant makes something clear: the pastor is not the church. The church is not the pastor.
We are one body under one Lord, with different roles but a shared mission: helping people find and follow Jesus.
Membership means:
The pastor commits to shepherd faithfully.
The church commits to support faithfully.
Both commit to humility, clarity, and mission.
When that mutual commitment is healthy, the church flourishes.
As Lake Hills continues in renewal, clarity about membership is essential.
Renewal requires:
trust,
communication,
shared sacrifice,
shared prayer,
shared responsibility.
It is easy to treat church as a service provider. It is biblical to treat it as a covenant family. And covenant families grow stronger not when everything is easy, but when promises are honored.
If someone asked, “What does membership mean at Lake Hills?” I would answer this: It means we promise to follow Christ together — with clarity about our roles, humility in our relationships, and faithfulness to our mission.
That kind of membership is not casual. But it is beautiful. And it is biblical.
